magazine site skins

I've posted some of the lead story presentation challenges and solutions that I've been working on. Basically what I came up with was incorporating all of those ideas into a default design and structure that can be skinned for each product. The base will contain all of the code, css styles, jquery, grid structure and page layout necessary to have a niche product site already built ready to go.

lead story examples

I'm posting some examples of the lead story presentation that I've been working on. To recap, the main issue is dealing with portrait and landscape photographs and how to display them in a flexible appealing way. Magazines use mostly portrait images as the pages are vertical but the web is a much more horizontal medium. Designing a flexible solution that enables editors to choose the presentation that best fits the art but still adheres to the style guides was a challenge especially when thinking about the backend logic that has to be coded to make this work.

magazine lead story presentation

I'm working on wireframes for a new presentation of lead stories and images. I wrote earlier about the challenges of coming up with a flexible solution that can handle vertical and horizontal images of varying widths and heights. I plan to use jQuery to create a carousel with display panels rotating through. This is nothing new and is widely used. I am trying a different approach with the layout of each panel. Although this solution would require quite a bit of work on the back end to add the flexibility, the ability to add different content modules based on the image size and orientation desired would be well worth it.
